I know there is a global toggle for "show cost for free events" and a translation tag for the text to show for free events...
But what I would like is the ability to set that text for "$0 events" on a per-event basis so that registrants get relevant and non-confusing information at the event view / detail view level. I find that I'm often changing the global translation text to cover the majority of my $0 events, and hacking CSS or JS into custom modules or changing core code to force-change or hide others.

Sometimes, a $0 event is "free."
Other times, a $0 event cost is "actually calculated with fee fields on the registration screen" (in which case it would be nice to be able to tell the customer a base cost up front)
And yet other times, a $0 event with registration disabled means that the cost is "TBA and registration is not open yet, but we wanted to let you know that the event is planned for these dates".

What I propose is 2 additional fields, both titled "text to display instead of price" with one located next to the individual event cost box, and another in with the group options. Leaving these blank would result in EB's default behaviour; entering a value would override.

Hi James

Had a similar issue to you for the registration not yet open but we haven't yet set a price showing as free. I proposed some custom code to Tuan for that to allow disabling of showing price when registration not enabled. He didn't feel there was a demand so its not been merged in. (That was a global setting)

I also proposed a setting for events that were free but restricted to members. Your suggestion for text instead of price seems sensible for that (I went with identifying if members only event and adding the text automatically...)

I have a similar issue, although some of our events are by donation so that throws in another twist, but it seems to me there may be a client need for an option for this.

Yup -- implementation of this option could solve your issue too.
With implementation of the custom text for the register button and changing your text to BY DONATION (or something similar), you could then include a custom fee field that would allow the user to enter a donation amount.

I agree with the comments here.

I often have free event with a donation of food to the food bank or similar charities

Code is implemented. I will test it some more tonight and update the download package on server on tomorrow so that you can use it. I added a new field on event add/edit screen called Price Text (not sure if we could have a better term for it)

In case you enter a text into that field, that text will be displayed instead of the price of the event (which is usually Free in this use-case)

OK. Just want to update that this is now included in download package on server. Login to your account, access to My Downloads menu item, download latest version, upgrade it to your site to use this small improvement

Bonus if you use waiting list feature. Now, we can turn on/off waiting list feature for each event instead of just a global option as before (which was applied to all events)

Thanks, Tuan!
I am soooooo going to make use of this feature :) Now I can set the price to read "starting at $20", or "admission by donation", etc :)
