Identifying the current version of a group of documents

For a number of reasons, most related to a fairly dumbed down user base, we finish up with several versions of a document.  Then those same users complain that they don't know which is the current version.  You gotta laugh, not cry.

Anyway, what techniques are eDocman managers using to identify the current version of a group of similarly titled documents?
