I remember having this issue previously and it was a setting that needed to be changed but I can't seen to find it. Can anyone help please.

Just helping out here and think this "could be" what you're after, I'm only a fellow user of MSPro like yourself though, so no guarantees.
Look in your Dashboard > Configuration > "Reset membership id every year"
^^^ Is that what you maybe looking for, as my understanding is that if you have that set to "Yes" then it will do just that and thus create a new Membership ID each time your clients / end-users renew their membership at your site?
If it actually isn't what you're after, then my apologies and I hope you locate the issue, which I'm sure Tuan or a member of his team will be along shortly to confirm / or guide you to resolving the issue.

Thanks for the input but that is not what I am looking for.
My members would actually be very upset to have a new membership number each year as currently the first 4 digits represent the year they joined - our first member joined in 1970.

Hi Mike,
I think we may have our wires a little crossed, as I wasn't advising you to implement the feature; I was simply asking if due to your post here and current issue of "I have noticed that instead of extending an existing subscription for a specific member it is creating a new record" whether you could check if the Dashboard > Configuration > "Reset membership id every year" is enabled and thus could this be what is creating your current existing subscribers ending up with a new record being created, instead of it being simply extended?
Either way, hope you find your resolution.

I would also prefer not to see historic renewals, did you manage to resolve this?
Perhaps it is something to add to the features request - An option to either save or delete historic renewals.
