Payment Form custom payment amount

The client needs customers to be able to pay past-due balance in whatever amount they want. So the customer would put in a dollar amount and pay via authorize.net. They would note what it is for in a required text field, so that the payment can be reconciled by the accounting office.
The documentation on this is vague, although the capability appears to exist. I could not find an answer in the forum. How is it done, please, step-by-step? I do plan to purchase if I can satisfy myself that it will work. It does appear to have everything we need to solve this problem.

Actually, it is simple. You just need to create a form and enable amount field so that users can enter the payment amount on the form for processing payment.
