Plan and Renew Menus - hide criteria?

I created a menu item called 'Join' as a default Plan view. When we create menu item 'Renew', both menu items appear if the user is a Member. How can we make just the 'Renew' button appear only when the user is a member and within the 'Allow Membership Renewal' period, neither menu if the user is an active member outside of the 'Allow Membership Renewal' period, and just the 'Join' menu item when the user is not a Member?

Also, it would be great if the 'Renew' button remained after the membership has retired and there were a couple reminder emails, say 30 and 60 days after expiration. 'Gotta get 'em back!'

Sorry Derrick but I could not see any way to do that at the moment. The menu items are rendered by Joomla core menu module and we could not change it.
