Depend on Field displays nothing?

Trying to setup a basic field dependency - user select the # of kids they have from a drop down menu, then text fields appear based on the number of kids they selected for them to enter their names. The only issue is no matter what I do, when I select the "Depend on Field" drop down menu for any of the child's name fields, the only option is "Select" - none of my custom fields or the core fields are available for me to select... am I missing something here??
